Customer Reviews

Takes some time to work but is effective for medication related scalp psoriasis It has been nearly two months now and I have been using the shampoo twice a week and I have to say that it really does work -- but it takes quite a bit of time to start working. My experience with this product has been very different than others. Due to the medications I had been taking, I had developed an itchy scalp and needed a soothing shampoo. My GP recommended that I look for a shampoo with coal tar and after a lot of research I decided to give this product a try. When I first started using the product however, I was ready to send it back as being defective. Within minutes of rinsing the shampoo off my head I felt a burning sensation on my temples and behind my ears! I panicked and just rinsed my head again but this did not subside the sensation. I thought perhaps I was having an allergic reaction. However, with 30 minutes my scalp calmed down and the burning sensation faded.Days later I did notice that my scalp wasn't feeling so itchy and hot anymore. The shampoo had actually worked! So I gave it another try. Once more, after washing the shampoo off, my temples and ears were burning. But the burning subsided after a half hour or so and wasn't as intense as the first time. Now, after nearly 2 months, the shampoo is working like a dream. My head is feeling almost normal again while I'm continuing my medications. I find that I have to use this shampoo only once a week for it to be effective. My hair is also nice and shiny. After much trial and error here are a few things that I learned:1) I stopped using other shampoos while using this shampoo. Since my scalp was reacting to the medication in my bloodstream, I figured I didn't need to dehydrate it and drown it in any more chemicals than was necessary.2) I was initially letting the coal tar shampoo "marinate" my head for 5 minutes. The instructions say to let the shampoo sit for a "few minutes". I think this is too long. 3 minutes works best.3) I stopped using hot water to rinse off my head when using this shampoo. Instead, I now use lukewarm water and keep my hair washing separate from my showers. This also helps with calming down a hot and itchy scalp.4) For the first 4 weeks I used the shampoo twice a week. Then after that, I cut back to once a week. The shampoo does take some time to work but once it starts working, you don't have to use much of it.5) It is very important that when you are washing your hair you use your fingers to apply the shampoo to your scalp and not just let it rest on the top layer of your hair.6) Finally, make sure to shake the bottle vigorously just prior to use. This will make sure that the coal tar bits are evenly dispersed throughout the shampoo before you use it.Overall, I found this shampoo to be very effective for my scalp condition. While it does take a while to get working (nearly a month in my case), once it does, the shampoo provides much needed cooling relief to my poor head. The only other downside I'd warn other about is that the smell is quite strong and does linger on your hair for some days afterwards (though its potency subsides). The smell is very similar to Neutragena's T-Gel shampoo -- but more medicinal.I hope my experience and review has helped you. If so, I'd appreciate it if you could give me a thumbs up! Any questions about the product? Please let me know in the comments and I'll do my best to answer them! 5This stuff worked nicely. I never actually had a diagnosis of psoriasis, but it was that or eczema. Had lots of flakes om my shoulder and raised scaly patches under the hair on my head. My wife said it looked terrible. I tried two products from Walmart, Coal Tar Shampoo and Salicylic Acid Shampoo. Neither had the strength to have any affect. When I used MG217 Multi-symptom Shampoo and the MG217 Multi-symptom Coal Tar Gel, I saw relief after just 1 week, and complete disappearance of the symptoms in just about 3 weeks. Here's how I used the shampoo...When I went in to shower, I wet my hair at the sink, and shampoo'd as I normally would have in the shower, but after lathering and making sure to work the affected area of my scalp with my fingers and nails, I just let the shampoo stay on my head, after which, I brushed my teeth and shaved, before stepping into the shower and leaving it on my head until I finished showering, then finally rinsing it off. I did that twice a week. In addition, I used the Multi-symptom Coal Tar Gel between shampoos while sitting at my computer. I've stopped using the gel altogether since I no longer have the symptoms. I have continued using the MG217 Multi-symptom Shampoo. I do not notice the coal tar smell after rinsing and drying my hair. This is an excellent product. 5Great shampoo for problem scalp! I don't know for a fact that I have psoriasis on my scalp because no doctor I've seen can be bothered to look at it. All my life I've been told its dandruff. As a kid I was kicked out of a school a few times because they insisted it was head lice. What I do know is the skin on my scalp grows thick, itches like crazy, flakes like mad, every other shampoo, and soap I've tried has irritated it and made it worse, and when it really acts up, I have bleeding sores all over my scalp that itch worse than anything else I've ever suffered through. It sucks. For the last few years I've tried a variety of variations of the baking soda and ACV cleansing methods with mixed results. Baking soda alone gave me worse flakes but no scalp irritation, baking soda mixed with aloe vera soothed my scalp but left my hair greasy, and some mostly natural ingredient soaps used as a shampoo bar left my hair smelling great, slightly cleaner, but caused more sores and itching.I finally decided to try this stuff and well, so far I am thrilled. It smells horrible and the smell lingers in my hair for about 2 days. But honestly I don't care because my scalp is healing, there's minimal flaking, and almost no itching. My hair looks fantastic and is light and clean and full of body. A lot of people have suggested using a scented conditioner afterwards to counteract the smell- I'm sure that would work fine, I just worry about having a reaction to condition like I do with more shampoos and honestly if a little odor that smells like maybe I spilled some turpentine is the price I have to pay for a scalp that doesn't make me miserable, that's fine by me! I can only hope my scalp continues to improve with continued use of this fantastic shampoo. 5Works great I have tried tar shampoos in the past, with only marginal benefit. This one works great. It still smells like tar, but its not terrible - and the odor goes away quickly. They recommend you rotate use with the MG217 Salicylic Acid shampoo and a standard shampoo. I recommend you avoid shampoos with sulfates. 5Cleared up my scalp psoriasis scabs and dry hair line This has worked wonderfully for my scalp! I ve struggled with scabs on my head always appearing and dry skin around my front hair line even though I m very clean and use head and shoulders and conditioners. This is the first thing I ever bought to treat psoriasis because I had a feeling I had it but my mom actually told me a while back that I did have it when I was a baby so now I know! It really did work dramatically for me after the first use. I used it with small scans on my head and after the first use I felt my head where I knew they were and didn t feel anything to pick at and my dry hair line is gone. The tar smell isn t horrible at all. So many other shampoos have a much stronger smell. It looks runny when you pour it into your hand but it actually lathers nicely and stays put on your hair. I love this product and will repurchase when I run out. Thank you! 5MG217 has the most coal tar If you have psoriasis, this shampoo has the highest coal tar. Shake before putting less than a teaspoon on your palm and apply. Use a brush to really get it into the itchy parts. Then wash yourself to give it time to work. Rinse; can use an organic shampoo afterward. 5End Result Did Not Work For Me For months, I dealt with uncontrollable flaking and itching on my scalp. After reading reviews on how this has helped others on here (despite the fact that it does have ingredients that are harmful and can cause long term side effects), I decided to give this a try as my last resort before seeing my doctor to remedy the situation. As many others have mentioned in their reviews, yes this does have that fresh paved asphalt smell to it which is a lot to get used to. I used this shampoo 2-3x's a week in conjunction with an all natural tea tree oil shampoo to help mask the coal tar smell on my hair/scalp. I massaged the coal tar shampoo on the areas of my scalp that were affected and left on for 5-10 minutes each time. After showering and allowing my hair to naturally dry, I did notice parts of my scalp became soft, but hours later the itching and flaking continued. I still found my scalp feeling irritated throughout the day.I continued using this for another 2 weeks to see if my initial results would change, but unfortunately I was still suffering and I just couldn't stand the smell along with my symptoms any longer; therefore I stopped using this and made an appointment with my doctor. I ended up getting a prescription shampoo that has helped me out greatly, thank goodness! Plus, it doesn't have a smell and it has healed my scalp completely! 2Back to Black For people that comment on the smell, this is coal tar. You could seal your driveway or wash your hair. This is no frou frou shampoo. BUT that's what it takes to get big results for big problems. I was having a horrific case of psoriasis on my head. Not to be gross but coming off in chunks, not flakes. I was using tea tree which helps normal years but wasn't doing jack this year. After my BF actually captured a picture, I freaked. It looked as bad if not worse than it felt!!! Action mode. A bottle of T-Sal, this, and another wash with tea tree. I did this three days, using all products, and it was 99% gone. I'm now down to every other day since it's a drying combo but it works for severe psoriasis. I can wear dark colors and ditch the hats now!!! For those of you that suffer, you know how miserable it is both physically and mentally. While this is the magic, I do highly recommend the saliclyic acid wash first to start breaking it down, this to tear it apart, and a tea tree wash and condition for both the soothing and nice smelling properties. I also use one of the massaging scrub brushes to get all up in there. 5Finally, something that actually works! I ve had scalp sebopsoriasis for more than 6 years, and let me just cut to the chase by saying THIS STUFF WORKS. Like so many, I was spending hundreds of dollars on dermatology visits, shampoos, and solutions that weren t improving my case. I couldn t even sleep through the night without digging my nails into my scalp. It was unbearable. I was handed a starter pack of Otezla and as soon as I read the reviews on this side-effect burdened medication I knew it was time to venture down a different path. Hello internet. All forums & reviews led me here: to MG217 & the magic of coal tar. I started with the MG217 Psoriasis Multi-Symptom 2% Coal Tar Gel. I used this morning & night for about two weeks with zero expectations. Massive improvement. After looking into the brand and the products available, I ordered this shampoo. I used it consistently for two straight weeks, morning & night (as recommended in one of the reviews). I let it sit for about 5-10 minutes each time before rinsing. My advice: stick to it. For me, the results were amazing. Now, I ve cut my usage down to about 5x per week, or whenever the itchiness seems to be flaring up. I have a coal tar soap bar that I use to scrub certain areas that tend to be worse. At this point, I very rarely use the gel since the shampoo is working so well. As far as real shampoo goes I ve learned that sulfate-free is best. I use L Oreal s EverSleek Sulfate Free Keratin Conditioner to keep my hair soft.If you re wondering about the smell, it matches the name. However, if you re genuinely suffering from this annoying / confidence-killing condition, it won t bother you one bit. Bonus: you ll only smell it while you re washing your hair. It doesn t linger. This shampoo is not a cure, and it doesn t pretend to be. However, it s close enough for me. I can make it through a workday without sneaking a brush into the bathroom to rid my hair of specs. I can sleep through the night. I can FINALLY add some black to my wardrobe! Ugh I ve missed that color! 5First over the counter shampoo that worked I have suffered both scalp and face psoriasis and have tried about a a million shampoos and not one ever worked for me. This is the first over the counter shampoo that has helped. I use it with a shampoo brush (features in the photo) and this really helps nick down the layers of scales and buildup from psoriasis. I would defdinily give this a try if your someone like me 5
