Customer Reviews

Patience is the trick to saving money I moved up to the Fusion a few months ago, and while it was offering me a perfectly good shave, I just could not justify the price. The blades wear out very quickly on those plastic heads. I'm 24 years old, with a moderate full beard, and after having used this razor, I can tell you I'm not going back in the foreseeable future. The shave is excellent when I am patient and remember my training (don't pull the skin tight and don't press down). When I follow those rules along with my wet (shower) shave I get a fantastic shave just as good as the Fusion. I do have to have the patience to hit the spots I miss, but I eventually get them all.It takes about 10-15 minutes to shave, but I actually get less irritation. I love this old school stuff. 5Fantastic Razor I ordered this razor because I wanted a brand new twist-to-open model instead of a vintage, and I didn't want to pay the steep price of a Merkur Vision. I was a little apprehensive about getting a Parker because some of the reviews available on the internet were indicating some quality control issues while others had nothing but praise. I noticed that the negative reviews were generally older, hopefully indicating that the QC issues were resolved. When I unpacked the razor I was impressed with the quality of the finish. I won't lie - it looked much better than my workhorse Merkur 34C.I lathered up and decided it was time to see if this was just a pretty face with no substance, or if this was the real deal. With a Shark Stainless Steel blade, the shave this little thing gave was fantastic! I couldn't believe it. I used this blade for three or four days and the result never changed.I also gave this razor a run-down using Astra Platinum, Derby Extra, Feather, and Shark Super Chrome blades. The only one that I wasn't pleased with was the Derby, but I've yet to have a good shave from a Derby.I've been wet shaving for about 10 years now. I don't do anything special - my routine is a shower immediately followed by a shave. I use a cheap pure badger shaving brush and some Proraso shaving cream. Overall, this razor seriously outshaved my Merkur 34C at every turn. For the most part, it seemed the only way I could cut myself is to do something intentionally bad. I write the nicks the Derby gave me off as the fault of the blade, not the razor.I generally do one pass with the grain and one pass against, and this razor was able to give me baby-smooth results every time. It's important to note that the quality of your shave will vary based on your razor, your blade, your beard, and your skin. What works for one man may very well not work for another. I think this razor is mild enough that very few people should have any issue with it, however. You must make sure the blade gap is even on each side before completely closing the butterfly doors. Failure to do so will leave one side of the razor cutting way more aggressively than the other.I am very pleased with my Parker 90R and wouldn't hesitate to recommend it. 5First Safety Razor, Never Going Back I'm new to the Safety Razor shaving scene. Previously I'd shaved with Mach 3s and Gillette Fusions. I've been shaving for about 14 years now, and was tired of the poor quality of shave they provided. Granted, they were quick and "close enough", but I found that I had to shave far more often than I wanted to, and went through cartridges faster than I would have liked. Many people had recommended changing to a safety razor or a straight edge razor.I did a fair bit of research before buying the Parker 90R. I chose it because of the length of the handle, the weight of the razor, and the all metal construction. None of these are unique to the 90R, but it reviews well and met all of those expectations. After a full week of use, I'm quite pleased with the quality of the razor. It's a very forgiving razor, and will allow for a very close shave with little pressure applied. I find that two to three passes is sufficient for the smoothest shave I've ever had, and the shave usually lasts me all day. I've only used one of the included blades, which can play a significant role in the quality of your shave, so regardless of the quality of the razor, you may want to do some research on which blades to purchase.UPDATE: Two years into owning my Parker, and it's still the best quality-to-cost razor I own. 4Why did I use a Mach 3 for so long? This is the first product review I've written on Amazon. Nothing I bought here before has really inclined me to take the trouble, but this little razor, well - it's almost life-changing. Bold statement to make for something as insignificant as a shaving implement, but it's warranted in this case.I used to look at shaving as a necessary annoyance. It wasn't pleasant, but my wife doesn't like a beard so I made myself do it. But being as annoyance, I usually slacked off in doing it which resulted in my shaving once a week, if that (my beard doesn't grow terribly fast). Which resulted in my usually sporting a few days' worth of beard, an unkempt look. However, once I picked up this razor, all that changed. Why? To put it simply, what used to be a necessary annoyance has become a pleasure I look forward to. Seriously. I now wish my beard grew faster so I could shave daily.Using a safety razor necessitates a few other things: a good shaving soap/cream (I recommend the Omega shaving soap available from amazon), a good brush (badger hair is best), and using an aftershave is advised, if not necessary. All these things feel great on the skin and are just plain *fun* to use. It also necessitates that you pay attention to what you're doing rather than just going through the motions. However, the reward is a shave that's much closer to anything you've ever managed with the multi-blade razors while at the same time feeling easier on your face. No razor burn, just smooth skin.Last but not least, hell, using the safety razor/brush combo just makes you feel... male. Now, about this particular razor:- Quality: very good. It's heavy and feels like a solid, quality tool in your hand. Doesn't rust and is easy to rinse.- Design: excellent. The butterfly design makes it easy to replace blades and remove them to rinse after shaving. The shape of the razor helps find the correct angle for shaving. It's hard to describe, but to put it in simplest terms it just fits naturally: placing it against your face in the way that feels natural ends up being just the right angle.- Cuts and hacking up your face: complete myth. It's not difficult at all to shave without ever nicking yourself (I think I've done it twice in 2 months).Note about multi-blade razors:They're dominant in the market not because they're superior to the safety razors, but due to profit margins. Anyone can make razor blades for safety razors and as a result, they're available for around $0.10. However, the Mach3, etc. cartridges are only made by their manufacturers and by controlling their manufacture, they're able to jack up the price - they can cost over $3.00 each. Makes sense from a profit standpoint. 5Too light, but a good razor My 99R broke after a drop in the tub, and my wife got me this one. It's a good light razor. Ideally, you will want something with a bit more heftier head, as you will have to make several passthroughs for a shaves. Don't ever apply pressure with safety razors, or you will be getting some nasty razor burn. I'll keep it for traveling, but it just do not compare to the quick and close shave I can get with the heavier 99R. It's very forgiving for having bad angles, so way less nicks, great for entry level wet shaving. If you want a want good shave, opt for something heavier. 4Quality finish, excellent balance and all around great razor! The Parker 90R is my first safety razor. I have been thinking about making the switch for a few months and did a little research prior to making the purchase. I liked the idea of not only spending less each month on shaving supplies but also experiencing fewer if any in-grown hairs and skin irritation caused by the triple blades currently offered. I was impressed by the finish and quality of this razor. It has some weight to it making it feel like you are holding something of substance. I chose the Parker 90R mostly based on the great reviews but mostly because of two features. The first was the longer handle. It is more like the Mach 3, Shick or any other modern razors that I'm used to. The second is the butterfly feature. This makes changing blades very easy. You simply twist the bottom until the doors open, drop in the blade and tighten it down. There is definitely a learning curve. My first attempt ended in a few nicks and a fair amount of razor burn on my neck which is more sensitive to begin with. I have used disposable and multi-blade cartridges my whole life and the bad habits that they put you in are evident. Here are some things that I've learned that hopefully will help a fellow newbie. First the blade angle is important, they say to hold it at about 30 degrees. I learned how to do this by placing the top of the blade head on my face and gently moving it into position. Second and most important for me was not to put pressure on the blade. I feel that modern razors make you press into the skin in order to get a closer shave. Safety razors use the weight of the razor itself. You need to take your time, use short strokes and allow the razor to do its job. I have no additional safety razor to compare this to but I can say that I really have enjoyed the whole shaving experience. Shaving is a chore, but now I kind of look forward to it. I believe that this is great product,I'm sure that you can spend a handsome sum on a "better razor" but I see no point. I am a Parker fan! 5Not Parker's best razor The sole purpose of a razor is to hold the blade firmly in position for shaving. This model uses over half the handle to operate the clamshell closure, so unless you are very careful, you can inadvertently loosen the clamshell during use. This results in nicks and skips. Stick to a model in which only the knob at the far end of the handle operates the clamp. 3Great quality, Great price. American name, but made in India. Still great quality though!!! BUY IT! I LOVE MY PARKER!!! I love the long handle... The quality is superb. OK, so there is unfortunately a downside. The shipper Amazon used was On Trac. They "apparently" left my package by the door. I was home that day...no knock, no doorbell, nothing. I assume the foreigner that delivered it perhaps kept my package or a damned neighborhood kid took it. I say "foreigner" because when i called Amazon, the delivery driver came back to my house the next day and attempted to rip me a new rear end and I couldnt even understand him. Once he saw my badge, he seemed like a different guy. He changed his tune rather quickly. Interesting how the words Unified Police Department tend to calm someone down when they know they're in the wrong. My gut tells me this guy took the package, and I know how to tell if a person is lying!!! But please guys (and gals), don't let that stop ya from buying this lil guy. ITS GREAT and you (or your husband) will LOVE the quality and the quality shave... No complaints 5Pleasantly Surprised. My experience with items made in India have all been disappointing because on the low or non existent quality, after careful study of the reviews for the Parker 90R Razor I decided to take yet another chance with India made products. I was pleasantly and extremely, surprised at the quality of this razor. The razor I received was and is a good razor. I like the long handle, although it could use a bit more or the gripper lines on the handle,as it can become a bit slippery when wet, but I just keep the handle and my hand wiped dry and then there is no problem at all, All and all, as far as I'm concerned it is a very good 5 star razor, especially for the price. 5Sometimes newer isn't better, a must buy. Going backward for shaving is the best thing I could have ever done. Most razor companies do not want us to bring back or know about this simple yet highly effective way to shave. I remember my dad using a safety razor. I had been, like so many other men, using cheap twin blade disposable razors as far back as I can remember, decades. I spurned the new 3, 4 and now 5 blade razors that cost an arm and leg for replacement blades.I have just given myself the closest shave I can remember and no razor burn with this razor. I did not cut myself once but was very careful and watched a couple you-tube how to videos. I used cheap canned shaving foam. Besides taking short strokes I found that shaving with my hair and not against it worked best for me.They gave me 10 blades (two packs) instead of 5. I don't know if it was a mess up or not. Not that blade replacement are expensive for safety razors. Amazon has a nice deal, 100 blades for $15.88 and free shipping (100 7a.m. Platinum Double Edge Safety Razor Blades) that works out about 16 cents a blade!!!! Compare that to what they (retailers) want for some replacement blades for these supposedly superior 3,4 and now 5 blade razors. If not this model of a Safety Razor do yourself a favor and buy one of your choosing, you will not be disappointing and in the long run your face and wallet will thank you. 5
